TOWNSHIP NEWS BRIEF
New Type C Permit Ordinance Allows Overnight Parking For Multi-Family Homes In R-2-4 Zone
Maplewood Township recently passed an ordinance allowing residents in two- or three-family homes with single-wide driveways located within the R-2-4 Zoning District to apply for overnight parking for one (1) vehicle per household. Here’s how to know if you qualify; and how to apply if you do qualify.
FIRST THINGS FIRST. DO I CHECK THE BOX ON ALL 4 REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY FOR A TYPE C PERMIT?
- I am a Maplewood resident in the R-2-4 Zoning District.
- I live in a two- or three-family home with a single-wide driveway.
- I own or lease the vehicle I want the permit for.
- My vehicle is a private passenger automobile.
HOW CAN I CHECK IF I LIVE IN THE R-2-4 ZONE TO MEET THE FIRST REQUIREMENT?
R-2-4 is the teal area on our Township zoning map: https://www.maplewoodnj.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/1169/638276484407670000
You can check if your exact address lands in the R-2-4 Zone by going to https://map.govpilot.com/map/NJ/maplewood and doing the following:
- Enter your property address.
- Click the blue VIEW PROPERTY button.
- Click the third tab LAYERS.
- Scroll to the bottom to “Zoning Map” & check this circled area.
WHAT WILL THIS PERMIT ALLOW ME TO DO?
A TYPE C parking permit entitles the permit holder to park one car (per unit) in front of their residence, or the closest available parking space, within the R-2-4 Zoning District, between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. The Type C permit is intended for use of the automobile, not to store or garage an automobile on the street. (The Township may revoke a Type C permit if the Township determines it is being used to store or garage an automobile on the public street.)
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The new TYPE C permits are valid from January 1-December 31 and must be renewed annually. The permit costs $600 per year, or if a permit is issued after June 30th, it will cost 1/2 of the annual price. Residents may split the annual cost into monthly payments of $50.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR ONE?
You will need proof of residency via a valid New Jersey driver's license; or a copy of a valid New Jersey motor vehicle registration for the vehicle for which the permit is sought. Head to www.maplewoodnj.gov/parking to apply.
