MVA Temporary Public Mural Project

Maplewood Village Alliance Announces Call for Artists for Temporary Public Mural Project

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The Maplewood Village Alliance (MVA) is inviting artists to submit proposals for a new temporary public mural project in the heart of Maplewood Village.

The site-specific mural will be installed at Village Coffee, located at 164 Maplewood Avenue, and is intended to celebrate the creativity, vibrancy, and community spirit that define Maplewood while complementing the historic charm of the Village. The project is part of MVA’s ongoing commitment to beautification, placemaking, and supporting arts and culture within the downtown district.

“We are excited to bring more public art into Maplewood Village,” said ErinRose Baldry, Executive Director of the Maplewood Village Alliance. “Projects like this help create a more welcoming and engaging downtown experience while also supporting artists and celebrating the creativity that exists within our community.”

The selected artist or artist team will create an original mural that will serve as a temporary public art installation. The work will be painted on tarp or canvas and installed on the brick wall at the corner of Village Coffee for public viewing.

Artists are encouraged to submit concepts that reflect the energy and character of Maplewood. While there is no prescribed theme, the mural should create a meaningful connection with the community and remain respectful of the historic character and charm of the Village. A selection committee composed of creative professionals, community members, and MVA representatives will review submissions. Between three and five finalists will be selected based on qualifications and experience and invited to develop concept sketches before a final proposal is chosen.

Applications must include:

· A concept statement for the mural

· Artist bio or resume

· Portfolio samples or website/social media links

· Two professional references

The application deadline is June 1, 2026.

Finalists will be notified by June 11, with concept sketches due June 29. The final artist selection will take place thereafter, with installation and a public unveiling planned for late August, with the date to be announced.
