Township Administration

The Township Administrator serves as the Chief Administrative Officer of the Township, as established by ordinance. The Administrator is the Appropriate Authority and oversees all municipal departments. All Department Heads report directly to the Township Administrator and/or their designee. The Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Township government, ensuring that they align with the policies set by the Mayor and Township Committee.

Township Clerk

The Township Clerk’s Office is essential to the operations of Maplewood’s local government, ensuring transparency, efficient record-keeping, and exceptional public service. The office serves as the Secretary to the Township Committee, managing agendas and official records; as the Chief Administrative Officer for Municipal Elections, overseeing local election processes; and as the Secretary of the Municipal Corporation, maintaining township records and legal documents. It also manages voter registration, key administrative functions, and public records. Additional services include issuing permits, processing vital records, and overseeing various licensing functions.

Community Development (Building and Construction)

The Department of Community Development (DCD) encompasses several key divisions: Construction, Zoning, Property Maintenance, and Zoning and Planning Board Administration. The DCD also initiates and implements special projects focused on environmental concerns, business development, and seeks grant opportunities from both public and private sources.

Community Services (Recreation)

The mission of the Maplewood Department of Recreation, Senior Services, and the Division of Arts & Culture is to provide a wide range of entertaining, safe, and inclusive recreational programs and services to the Township's diverse population. We aim to deliver these services in a cost-effective and progressive manner. Department of Public Works

The Department of Public Works (DPW) provides essential services that help keep Maplewood running smoothly. This includes street sweeping, roadway repairs, and tree pruning to maintain a clean and safe environment. They also take care of municipal buildings, parks, and handle repairs for town vehicles. DPW manages recycling, snow removal during winter, and operates the jitney service to help residents get around.

Engineering

The Engineering Department of Maplewood Township is responsible for maintaining and improving the community's infrastructure. Key tasks include designing and implementing road improvements, maintaining storm and sanitary sewers, and supporting traffic calming initiatives. The department also handles a range of other engineering duties as they arise.

Focused on capital improvements, the department is involved in budgeting, planning, and maintaining tax maps, as well as grant writing. It oversees projects to improve roads, sewers, parks, ball fields, buildings, and traffic systems, and is also responsible for environmental hazard remediation. Additionally, the team handles surveying, construction inspection, project design, and site plan reviews.

To complete specialized tasks, the department works with consulting engineers and outside professionals. It collaborates closely with the Planning and Zoning Boards, with support from an engineer, attorney, and two administrative staff members who manage daily operations.

Finance

The Finance Department handles a wide range of financial responsibilities for the Township, including managing tax collection, financial reporting, and municipal budgeting. Key responsibilities include:

Maplewood Police Department

The mission of the Maplewood Police Department is to serve and protect all individuals within the Township in a fair, safe, professional, and considerate manner, in alignment with the law and the community’s established goals.

South Essex Fire Department

The South Essex Fire Department (SEFD) is dedicated to minimizing the loss of life and property threatened by fire, medical emergencies, and other incidents. The department is committed to delivering the highest quality professional services with available resources.

All SEFD members are held to a high standard of professionalism, continually enhancing their skills to meet the demands of the fire service. The department also emphasizes ongoing fire education and safety for both residents and personnel.

SEFD is the primary provider of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Maplewood, operating 24/7. Firefighters are trained as N.J. State Certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT-B) and undergo regular training in the latest patient care methods, in partnership with local hospitals.
