Home MenuLocal Cannabis Transfer Tax
The program runs similar to sales tax in the sense that it is self-reporting, although the municipalities do not have a website or form to remit the payment.
On a quarterly basis, license holders provide the Finance Department with a document showing their gross sales for the quarter. This document can be as simple as a printout from your accounting software or a handwritten summary on a piece of paper—anything between those two options is acceptable. The document should also include the licensee's business name to ensure proper application of your payment. Checks should be made payable to the Township of Maplewood, and the memo line should indicate the quarter the payment is for (e.g., 1Q25, 2nd Quarter 2025 “Business Name” payment, etc.).
The Township will deposit the payment, and sometime next year, the licensee will submit either their financial audit or the first page of their tax return showing annual gross sales to the Finance Department. This document will be used to calculate whether a credit is due to the business based on prior year payments, or if there is a balance owed, which the licensee will remit with the audit or tax return.
Annually, when the license is up for renewal, the Clerk’s office will request financial information to ensure property taxes are current and cannabis fees have been paid.
