The Township of Maplewood provides notary services during regular business hours. Multiple notaries are available throughout the Township to assist residents.

Fee

The fee is $2.50 per notarized signature.


Availability

Notaries are available during normal hours of operation. Appointments are required to confirm availability.


Discretion

A notary may decline service if the document, identification, or circumstances raise questions of authenticity, clarity, or compliance with law.


Requirements

  • Valid, government-issued photo identification is required.
    (Electronic identification is not accepted.)

  • Documents must be signed in the presence of the notary.

  • If more than one person is signing, all signers must be present and provide valid government-issued photo identification.

  • Notary and customer must be able to communicate directly. New Jersey law does not permit the use of a translator.

  • Service is limited to two documents per person, per day at the Township Clerk's Office, and ten documents per person, per day, at the Maplewood Library.


Witnesses

  • The Township does not provide witnesses.

  • Witnesses may not be solicited on-site.

  • A witness must personally know the signer and present valid government-issued photo identification.

  • For clarification, our office does not notarize the following:

    • Documents in a language not understood by the notary

    • Certain public records that cannot be copied or notarized, including:

      • Adoption records

      • Birth certificates

      • Death certificates

      • Marriage certificates

      • Divorce decrees

    • Deeds

    • Wills, living wills, trusts, or codicils

    • Depositions

    • Mortgages

    • Powers of attorney

    • Real estate closing documents

    • Passports

    • Electronic notarizations

    • Documents that do not contain a notarial certificate or designated space for a notary’s signature
