The Township of Maplewood is considering the installation of bicycle lanes along the full length of Parker Avenue, from Maplewood Avenue to Irvington Avenue.

To date, the Township has hosted four virtual community meetings to discuss the proposal. The current plan includes dedicated bike lanes from Maplewood Avenue to Boyden Avenue, which would require the removal of on-street parking on both sides of that section. From Boyden Avenue to Irvington Avenue, shared lane markings—or “sharrows”—are proposed to guide bicyclists in lanes shared with motor vehicles.

This initiative aligns with Maplewood’s “Complete Streets” approach to street design, which aims to improve safety and accessibility for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

Numerous public comments have been received at recent Township Committee meetings. A final decision on whether to proceed is expected at the July 15th Township Committee meeting, which will be held both in-person and virtually. Public comment will be welcomed before any action is taken.

MORE ON THIS PROJECT

During the past year, Maplewood has focused on creating a town-wide system of bike lanes to enable adults and children to travel to our parks, schools, shopping districts and train station in a safe manner. We’ve identified Parker Avenue as an opportunity to create a safe, biking travel option connecting the east and west sides of town.
